Abstract
Weakly acid liquids, for example pharmaceutical preparations are stored in a container the walls of which are made of an austenitic alloy comprising Cr 20-26 per cent; Ni 15-25 per cent; Mo 1-3 per cent; C not exceeding 0.06 per cent and the remainder iron, the alloy being free from precipitated carbides. In order to ensure complete solution of carbides, satisfactory cold working properties and a suitable grain size, preferably 5 to 8 A.S.T.M. standard, the alloy may be annealed for at least 1 1/2 minutes at at least 1950 DEG F. and then cooled within 3 minutes to below 800 DEG F. Before exposure to the weakly acid liquids the container may be exposed to a concentrated solution of an inorganic acid, the concentration of which is preferably at least 30 per cent of saturation, at an elevated temperature, e.g. 70 DEG C. up to the boiling point of the acid. The concetrated acid may be HNO3, H2SO4 or HCl or mixtures of two or more of these with or without organic liquids such as acetic acid. Examples are given of suitable treating compositions in some of which NaCl is also included.
