Abstract

672,343. Magnetic switches. GRAVINER MANUFACTURING CO., Ltd., WILKINSON SWORD CO., Ltd., MATHISEN, A., HALL, H. W., and STRAIN, R. N. C. April 3, 1950. [Feb. 1, 1950] No. 2590/50. Class 38 (v). [Also in Groups XXVI, XXXV and XXXVIII] A temperature responsive device specially suitable for giving warning of excessive temperatures in the various fire-proof compartments of a jet engine plant on an aircraft (see Group XXVI), comprises a cap 2 of magnetic material, which on reaching its Curie point loses its magnetic properties thereby causing relative movement between itself and a permanent magnet and the consequent operation of contacts. In the form shown in Fig. 2, the element 2 normally attracts one pole of an L-shaped permanent magnet 10 mounted in a frame pivoted at 12 and holds it in the position shown against the repulsive action of a second' permanent magnet 16 till the Curie temperature is reached when contacts 13, 14 are closed. When the temperature drops the parts resume their original positions. The magnet 10 and frame are pivoted at their C. of G. so that vibration has no effect and a blade spring 17 presses on the pivot pin to take up any play. In a modification, the frame carries one magnet which attracts the cap 2 and another magnet which is repelled by a third magnet. In another modification, the frame is biased by a spring and by air blast from an air scoop, and carries one U-shaped magnet with a short leg. The magnetic elements may be made of ferro nickel with nickel varying from 34 per cent to 45 per cent if the desired temperature of the Curie point is between 250‹ C. and 450‹ C. The elements may also be blackened or coated with silica so that they respond more readily to change of temperature.
