Abstract
700,213. Press button switches; thermal switches. BURCH, L. W., and BURCH, H. K. Aug. 23,1951 [Nov. 29, 1950], No. 19889/51. Class 38(5) [Also in Group XXXII] A spring E (see Group XXXII) comprising at least one elongated strip 40 of resilient material of high width to thickness ratio, and having integral tension members 45, 46 has an arm 90 carrying a switch contact 91. The member 46 is riveted to a boss 74 formed in the body 71 of the switch. The member 45 is riveted to a tongue 72 integral with the body 71. After assembly the tongue 72 is slightly depressed below the level of the member 46. This has the effect of producing a slight separation of the members 45, 46 which results in the spring warping into one of two stable positions of equilibrium. In this position, the contact 91 engages a contact 82 carried by, and insulated from, the switch body 71. Load applied at P by a pin 92 mounted on a leaf spring 93 (Fig. 18) carried by the switch cover 94, will .result in the spring snapping over to its other position of equilibrium. As applied to a rod-and-tube type thermostat, Figs. 23, 24 (not shown), the member 45 is connected to the free end of the rod and the member 46 is rigid with the thermostat housing. Differential expansion thus results in tension occurring between the members 45 and 46, and thus causes the arm 90 to move into contact making (or breaking) position.
