Abstract
671,159. Exhaust silencers. WALKER, G. B. March 9, 1950, No. 6006/50. Class 7(ii) Engine or other exhaust gases passing through an inlet 3 into a blanked-off pipe 1 escape with a swirling motion, through openings 8 formed by radially bent-in lips 9, into an expansion chamber 5 formed by a divergent casing 2, one end of which forms the inlet 3, frictionally receiving the pipe 1, and the other end of which is flanged for attachment to a converging outlet member 16 and to a spider 13 supporting both the closed end 7 of the pipe 1 and a tapered member 18 co-operating with the member 16 to prevent the formation of a low pressure zone behind the pipe 1. A cut-away 20 in the spider flange co-acts with circumferential slots 21 in the flanges of the members 2, 16 to allow drainage of condensed water.
