669,872. Visible signalling apparatus. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., COOPER, A. D., NELSON, E. H., and WILLOUGHBY, A. H. Aug. 4, 1950. [Sept. 6, 1949] No. 23094/49. Class 118 (ii). [Also in Groups XXXV and XL (a)] In Morse or other flash signalling apparatus comprising a HPMV lamp with auxiliary discharge, a switch 9 operated by a Morse key M alternately strikes and extinguishes the main discharge to produce the flashes, a transformer secondary in series with ballast impedances Z1, Z2, Z3 continuously maintains the auxiliary discharge 7-11 in operation, and means automatically boosts the auxiliary discharge whenever the switch 9 is operated to restrike the main discharge. The boost may be effected by cutting out a choke Z3 in series with the auxiliary discharge by a cut-out 12 in parallel with the operating coil 10 for the main discharge switch 9. The impedance Z2 may be a choke or a tungsten lamp so that its temperatureresistance coefficient renders the auxiliary discharge increase only temporary. The boost permits a lower restrike voltage, or lower auxiliary current, or greater separation of the auxiliary from the main discharge so that the light from the auxiliary discharge can be more readily obscured.
