[Also in Groups XXII, XXIV and XXIX] A coil stock holding and feeding device for a sheet material working machine, such as a punching, stamping or shearing machine, comprises a rotatable stockholder or reel 10 driven by a fluid-pressure motor to unreel the stock 11, a pressure-fluid source 58 operatively connected to a moving part of the machine and a valve 95 engaging the stock between the reel and the machine to control the supply of fluid to the motor 112 in accordance with the slackness of the stock. In a punching machine, an arm 26 on the punch platen 22 is connected by a pin-and-slot connection 28 to a lever 34 loosely mounted on a rock-shaft 39 by which the machine feed mechanism 12 is driven. The oscillation of the lever is transmitted to the rock shaft by its engagement with adjustable studs 47 and to a hydraulic piston 58 by a ball-head connection 54. Movement of the piston 58 (see Group XXIX) is transmitted by the fluid in a pipe 88 to a spring-loaded ram 112 connected to a rack 125 engageable with a gear 134 on the reel shaft. The connection between the ram and the rack comprises a slide 118 having a pair of pins 122 engaging inclined slots 124 in the rack and a pair of pads 128 are pressed by a U-spring 131 against the rack to retard its movement with respect to the slide on the initial movement of the ram so that, on the upstroke, the pins and slots move the rack laterally into engagement with the gear 134 and, on the return stroke, withdraw it from the gear. When the stock becomes slack, the valve 95 inserted in the fluid line is almost closed by a lever 106 having a roller 107 bearing on the stock, so reducing the rate of unreeling. In a modification, the piston 58 may be operated directly from the punch platen and the rack 125 may be replaced by a yoke 170, Fig. 11, pivoted at 169 on a link 167 pivoted to the ram rod and having a pair of rollers 174, 175 which, on the up stroke, grip on either side of a flange 177 fitted on the reel or formed on a drum secured to the reel shaft.
