[Also in Group XXX] An endless conveyer belt or cable is maintained at a predetermined tension by a retroactive servomotor control system. An endless belt passes over a tensioning roller 5 mounted on a carriage 6 which is movable by a winch drum 9 acting through a cable 7. A lever 15 fulcrumed at 14a carries at one end a pulley 8 which engages a bight in cable 7 and therefore exerts a moment on the lever proportional to the tension in the belt. The other end of the lever is attached to both an adjustable spring 16 and the operating member of a valve 13 which controls the supply of hydraulic fluid to an hydraulic motor 11 driving the winch drum 9. In operation, with spring 16 set to produce a predetermined belt tension, variations in that tension are automatically corrected by movement of carriage 6. Limit switches (not shown) immobilize the conveyer drive mechanism in the event of the belt breaking or jamming and so causing an excessive movement of the carriage.
