1357687 Winding webs UNITED MERCHANTS & MFRS Inc 18 April 1972 [22 April 1971] 17927/72 Heading B8R Apparatus for winding webs, e.g. fabric webs, into a roll 18, comprises a driven take-up roller 52, a web roll tensioning assembly comprising a plurality of guide rollers 26, 27, 28 pivotably mounted, e.g. by arms 23, with at least one of said guide rollers 26 abutting the take-up roller 52, and means 19 for guiding a web 15 to said assembly and through said guide rollers to the take-up roller 52 in such a way that the tension in the web 15 from the means 19 to the assembly urges the abutting guide roller 26 against the web roll 18 winding on roller 52 thereby tensioning the roll 18. The guide rollers, one of which may be a bowed spreader roller 27 having a flexible surface 27r, are mounted on a plate 21 adjustably fixed to the arms 23 which are either pivoted to a frame member 95 and can be moved by cables 43 for replacement of a full take-up roller, or pivoted to arms (141), Fig. 12 (not shown), which can be pivoted away for roller replacement. In an alternative embodiment, the web roll is supported on a sandpaper covered roller (41), Fig. 2 (not shown), the drive to this roller being provided via a ratchet wheel (25), Fig. 2 (not shown), driven intermittently by a pawl (77) connected by linkage (70) to a pivoted lever (62) carrying a drop weight (61). At the end of a drive stroke, the lever is raised to a horizontal position by a pneumatic cylinder (101) actuated by switches (91), (92) activated by linkage (85), (86), (81) connected to the linkage (70). The lever then drops again driving the wheel (25) through a further increment. By using two drop weight and lever systems acting on the same ratchet wheel (353), Fig. 4 (not shown), continuous drive can be effected.
