In the drawing, on which the deviceis shown diagrammatically, the numeral designates the main body of the machine having a' recess 21 piston 22. This piston forms the base for supporting the work-piece. In this instance the work-piece consists of an arm 23 having an opening 24 therein which is adapted to receive the knurled end 25 of a shaft 26. shaft, when pressed into the opening 24 of the arm, will be rigidly secured to said arm.
In order to establish a substantially leak-proof connection between the wall of the recess 21 and the piston 22, a counter-bored recess 27 in the outer end of recess 21 forms a packing chamber containing the packing element 28 held in proper sealing position by the gland 29. A bracket 30 extends from the main body of the machine 20, this bracket having a head portion providing a cylinder 31 which communicates with another cylinder of reduced diameter designated by the numeral 32. A duct or passage 33 connects the recess 21 with the cylinder 32. Within the cylinder 32 a piston 34 is reciprocably supported, said piston having an enlarged head portion 35 slidable within the cylinder portion 31. To the piston 35 there is attached the stop-member or detent 36, which has a head portion 37 slidably engaging abutment block portion 38 of the bracket 30. A spring 39 interposed between the piston portion 35 and acylinder head 40 threaded into the open end of cylinder portion-31, normally, yieldably urges the said piston portion against the shoulder provided between the two cylinder portions 31 and 32.
When in normal position, the stop member or detent head portion 37 is in the path of move 'ment of a ram 50, which is adapted to exert pres- 5 sureupon the work-piece 26. This ram 50 may providing a cylinder for the reception of the be moved by any suitable source of power, in the present instance it is shown as'being moved by .hydraulic power, ram 50 forming a portion of a piston 51 within the cylinder 52. Hydraulic pressure for moving the ram 50 upon its pressure exerating stroke is provided through the pipe 53, the application of said fluid pressure through said pipe being controlled by a manually operable valve 54. The source of fluid pressure supply is received through the pipe 55 connected with the control valve 54. Pipe 56 connected with the control valve 54 leads into the side of the cylinder 52. The fluid pressure from pipe ,56 directed into the cylinder 52 is adapted to return the ram 50 to normal inoperative position, as shown in the drawing.
It will be seen that the portion 60 of the ram 50, which is adapted to engagewith the stopmember or detent 37, is normally spaced therefrom so that said detent will not engage the ram until it has moved through an initial portion of its range of movement. During this initial portion of its range of movement, the ram will'have engaged the work-piece 26 and will have pressed or forced said work-piece portion 26 partially 30 into the opening 24 of the arm 23 to which shaft 26 is to be attached. The passage or pipe 65 with its ball check-valve 66 is provided to supply fluid to the recess chamber 21 if the fluid supply therein has been depleted for any reason such as 35 leaks or the like.
It will be seen that the fluid column in the duct or passage 33 maintains the'base piston 22 in a position so that a space or chamber 69 is normally provided between the bottom surface of said piston 22 and the bottom of the recess 21. Thus it may be seen that the piston 22 is yieldably supported within its cylinder 21. The spring 39 is of sufficient tension so that it will normally maintain the piston portion 35 in the position shown in the drawing, or in the position in which the fluid column within the passage 33 and within the, chamber 69 will maintain piston 22 in this suspended position.
When the operator depresses the pedal 67 to permit fluid pressure to be transmitted from the pipe 55 through pipe 53 into the cylinder 52 against the top of the piston 51, the ram 50-will be moved downwardly in the direction of the arrow 68, the ram engaging the work-piece por tion 26and pushing it or pressing it into the opening 24. If the fit between the shaft 26 and the opening 24 in the arm 23 is not sufiiciently tight, or more specifically, if theflt of shaft 26 in the opening 24 is too loose, then the pressure required to push the shaft in said opening will not force the piston 22 downwardly into its cylinder 21 against the efiect of the spring 39 hydraulically to maintain said piston 22 in a normal position, consequently the stop-member or detent 37 will remain in its normal position 'asshown in the drawing, thereby being engaged by the-ram 50 when it. has moved through its initial portion of movement. This will eliminate the completion of the insertion of shaft 26 into the opening 24, for, as has been said heretofore, the fit between these two parts in this instance is too loose. On the other hand, if the insertion of shaft 26 into the opening 24 provides sufiicient resistance to the movement of the ram. 50 in the direction of the arrow 68, that is, if the fit between shaft 26 and opening 24 is sufiiciently tight to produce a good assembled device, then piston 22 will be moved downwardly-in its cylinder 21 against the effect of spring 39, and thus the'fiuid column in channel 33 and chamber 69 will move piston 34 and its portion 35 against the eifect of spring 39, resulting in a movement of the detent 36 to retract its head portion 37 from the path of movement of the ram. This permits continuation of the ram movement 50 in a direction of the arrow 68 to provide for the complete insertion of the knurled portion 25 of shaft 26 into the opening 24 or arm 23. i
From the aforegoing description it may be seen that applicant has provided a control mechanism for a pressing machine which will not permit a complete cycle of operation of the machine'if the work-pieces upon which the machine is operating are not properly being assembled. More specifically, if the work-pieces being assembled by the machine are not of a proper fit, the control device will remain in its normal position so that the machine can operate through only a portion of its cycle, while on the other hand, if the work-pieces properly fit to provide a suitable assembled piece, then the control device will operate to permita complete cycle of operation of the press.
While the form of embodiment of the present invention as herein disclosed, constitutes a preferred form, it is to be understood that other forms might be adopted, all coming within the scope of the claims which follow.
What is claimed is as follows:
1. A. device of the character described comprising, in combination, a work-piece supporting base; a pressure exerting member adapted to engage thework-piece; means normally directly engageable by said member for limiting its movement toward the work-piece; and means adapted to render said means unengageable by the pressure exerting member in response to a predetermined pressure upon the supporting base.
2. A device of the character described comprising, in combination, a pressure member; a work-piece supporting base; means for positively limiting the movement of said pressure member; and means for rendering said aforementioned means ineffective when the pressure of said member attains a predetermined value during said limited movement.
3. A device of the character described comprising, in combination, a pressure ram; a workpiece supporting base movable by the ram at a predetermined pressure only; means normally in the path of the ram for positively impeding its progress after it has moved through an initial,
portion of its travel; and means for moving said aforementioned means out of the path of the ram in response to movement of the base. I
4. A device of the character described com prising, in combination, a pressure ram; a base for supporting the work-piece, said base being movable by the ram at a predetermined pressure;
a detent normally in the path of the ram and adapted to be engaged by the ram positively to stop its movement after it has traveled through I sponsive to a predetermined pressure by the ram during its said initialmovement to render the detent ineifective to stop the ra 6.'A device of the charact described comprising, in combination, a pressure ram; a stop member normally adapted positively to impede the movement of the ram after it has traveled through an initial portion of its range of movement; two cylinders, each containing a piston, one providing a work-piece carrier, the other being attached to the stop member; means connecting the pistons to have them move substane tially in unison; a spring urging the stop member piston into normal position, said spring being overcome only by a predetermined pressure of the ram upon the base piston, whereby the stop member piston is operated to move the stop member out of the path of movement of the ram.
7. A device of the characterdescribed comprising in combination, a base for supporting a work piece; a pressure member adapted to be moved toward saidbase; means for stopping the movement of the pressure member; and means adapted to render said stopping means ineffective in response to a predetermined pressure exerted by the pressure member against the workpiece on the base.
8. A device of the character described comprising, in combination, a base for supporting a workpiece; a pressure member adaptef to be moved a predetermined distance toward the base; means for stopping the movement of the pressure member after it has moved through an initial portion of said predetermined distance; and means adapted to render said stopping means inefiective in response to a predetermined pressure exerted by the pressure member against the work-piece on the base.
