Abstract
667,254. Stuffing-box substitutes. CHERRIE, C. M., and WORTHINGTON-SIMPSON, Ltd. Jan. 5, 1950. No. 288/50. Class 122(v). In a sealing device comprising a rotary rubbing- ring 5 having spaced end walls defining an annular groove open to the adjacent surface of a concentric rotary member 2 and maintained in rubbing engagement with a complementary fixed face and a compressible sealing ring 6 located with axial freedom within the annular groove, a driving member 11 is slidably seated in a keyway 10 in the rotary member 2 and maintained in engagement with a radial groove 9 in an end face of the rubbing ring 5. A spring 13 urges the rotary ring 5 into rubbing contact with a face of a fixed cover plate 4 and also serves to maintain the driving member 11 in engagement with the radial groove 9 either directly or through the medium of an interposed ring. The driving member 11 comprises a base portion 12 and a radial portion and is prevented by the spring 13 from being radially displaced under the action of centrifugal force.
