Class 64(iii) Relates to apparatus for cooling milk or other liquids by a coolant liquid, e.g. water, and comprising a bank of flat hollow plates 1 clamped together with interposed gaskets 2 to form intervening spaces 17 alternating with and isolated from the interior spaces 7 of the hollow plates. According to the invention the inlet to and outlet from the bank, for the cooling liquid communicate with the interior spaces 7 of the hollow plates through a series of aligned holes 18 in the plates and through aligned holes 19 in the gaskets, and the inlet to and outlet from tha bank for the liquid to be cooled, communicate with the intervening spaces 17 through aligned passages extending through and sealed from the interiors of the hollow plates and through slots 21, Fig. 2, in the gaskets 2. The latter passages, connecting adjacent spaces 17, may be formed by bushes 20, Fig. 6, or by flat washers interposed between the opposite walls of each hollow plate. Interior ribs 9 and exterior ribs 12 may be formed on the walls of the hollow plates and may be integral therewith or separately attached as by welding. The individual plates may be formed as shown in Fig. 6, from a pair of sheets 8 spaced apart by the ribs 9, pinched together at the edges and bound with channel edging 11, or from a pair of sheets secured one at each side of a flat rectangular spacing frame. Four holes 18 are provided in each hollow plate, diagonally opposed pairs of holes communicating respectively with adjacent fluid spaces 17 and with adjacent fluid spaces 7 of the bank. The two fluids may flow through the bank in parallel or in contraflow.
