582,879. Heat-exchangers. CO-OPERATIVE WHOLESALE SOCIETY, Ltd., and FARNORTH, P. Sept. 27, 1944, No. 18460. [Class 64 (iii)] A plate heat-exchanger, e.g., a milk cooler, comprises an assembly of packed plates 10 carried by a frame 4 which is pivotally mounted in bearings 6 in a pair of side supporting brackets 1 in such a manner that the plate assembly may be turned between a vertical working position and the horizontal cleaning position, shown, to facilitate unpacking and separation of the plates. The frame 4 carries a pair of rods 7 supporting end headers 8, which may constitute flow and return conduits, and also four corner guides or rods 9 on which the plates 10 are mounted, the rods 9 being provided with removable heads 9a to prevent accidental withdrawal-of the said headers and plates when the assembly tightening nuts 8a on the rods 7 are removed. The plates are each in the form of a flat metal sheet having undercut hook-like recesses 11 at two of its four corners and open recesses 12 at the other corners for engagement with the rods 9, an aperture 13 at each end, and a surrounding rubber packing member 14, with additional packing members 15 around the apertures 13, bonded thereto on one face only. The plates may have spacing dimples &c. or be fluted or corrugated to prevent collapse under pressure, and the edges thereof may be flanged or folded.
