Abstract
1,179,245. Contact heat exchangers. R. PRIESTLEY. 26 Sept., 1967 [26 Sept., 1966], No. 42861/66. Heading F4K. A frame member for supporting a sheet or packing in a cooling tower over which a film of liquid may flow in contact with a gaseous medium, comprises a first continuous planar portion A to which said sheet (15, Fig. 3) is attachable, a second portion B spaced from said first portion and having, in cross-section, the profile of one-half of a regular polygon having sides 11, 12, and a third portion C interconnecting said first two portions, said third portion having sides 13, 14 corresponding to sides 11, 12 and which lie in planes extending at an angle to the plane of portion A. In constructing the frame assembly, the portions B are secured together in a back-to-back abutting relationship, to form a series of substantially regular hexagonal spaces therebetween. The frame members are formed integrally from a single sheet of thermoplastic material in one and the same operation. In order to improve the distribution of the liquid film on the sheets, the surfaces of the sides 13 may be provided with a patterned surface e.g. by channelling, honeycombing or dimpling.
