678,333. Plate heat-exchangers. WEDHOLMS AKTIEBOLAG. July 28, 1950 [Aug. 12, 1949], No. 18871/50. Class 64(iii) In a heat exchanger for pasteurizing cream &c. and comprising spaced parallel plates with sealing strips 22 around their edges and alternate spaces connected to the inlets 14, 18 and outlets 16, 20 for the heatexchanging fluids, the interspaces for one fluid, e.g. cream, are each divided into a plurality of passages 36, 44, 46 which are narrower than the plates and are connected in series to one another, and an inlet opening 14 at one corner of one of the plates bounding the interspace is connected by a transverse passage 34 to the passage 36 furthest from it. A similar transverse channel 48 connects the passage 46 to the outlet 16. The plates have corrugations 28. In the spaces for the other fluid, e.g. steam, passages similar to 36, 44, 46 are connected in parallel to the inlet and outlet. Sealing strips defining the pasages are located in grooves in the plates. Where sealing strips are omitted from parts of the grooves, spacing of the plates is maintained by small cylinders 84 welded in the grooves, or by bosses or ribs pressed up and filled with welding material. Drainage passages for the dead spaces 78, 80 may be provided in the plates across the sealing strips.
