660,469. Plate heat-exchangers. ZEUTHEN, C., ZEUTHEN, R., and LARSEN, M., (trading as SILKEBORG MASKINFABRIK ZEUTHEN and LARSEN). Jan. 28, 1949 [March 4, 1948], No. 2493/49. Class 64(iii) Relates to apparatus for heating a liquid, e.g. for pasteurizing milk, by means of a heating fluid, of the kind in which a number of plates and intervening packings are clamped together to form flow passages for said fluids. According to the invention, the passage or passages of flow for the milk decrease in cross-section, being largest at the inlet 16 and smallest at the outlet 17 of each milk passage. As shown, the packing 15 is affixed to the plate 14 and a packing member 15a divides the milk passage into two sections so that the milk passes down from the inlet 16 then up to the outlet 17 over the corrugated heating surface. In this embodiment, packing is arranged on the adjacent plate so that two independent passages are formed thereon in each of which the heating fluid passes in counter-flow to the milk on the other side of the plate. In another embodiment, the plates and packing are formed for the milk and heating medium flow each to be undirectional, the milk from bottom to top and the heating fluid from top to bottom of the respective plates.
