Abstract

442,293. Plate heat-exchangers. CHERRY-BURRELL, Ltd., 102, Great Saffron Hill, London.-(Cherry-Burrell Corporation; 427, West Randolph Street, Chicago, U.S.A.) Aug. 16, 1934, No. 23652. [Class 64 (iii)] Apparatus for exchanging heat between fluids, e.g. for cooling or heating milk, of the kind comprising ported plates and frames clamped together to provide two independent flow paths for the fluids is built up of two different forms of plates alternately assembled with successive plates of the same form reversely arranged relatively to one another. The apparatus may comprise a series of groups of corrugated plates 1 .. 4, Fig. 6, having integral frames 21 provided with packing grooves and notches 35, 36, Figs. 4, 5, adapted to be engaged with guide-bars 32, 34 secured to the fixed end members 30, 31, Fig. 1, so that they may be clamped between the member 30 and a screw-operated member 38. The like plates 1, 3 are formed with ports 25, 26 passing respectively through the frames and the,plates, while the like plates 2, 4 are provided with ports 23, 24 passing through the frames and the plates respectively. The whole of the plates are assembled with their frames facing in the same direction and, in use, one fluid, e.g. the milk, enters the space between the plates 4, 3 through the port 24 in the plate 4 and passes therefrom through the port 25 in the plate 3 and the adjacent port 24 in the plate 2 into the space between the plates 2, 1. At the same time a cooling or heating fluid passes into the space between the plate 1 and the adjacent plate 4 through the port 25 in the plate 1 and thence through the ports 26, 23 in the plates 1, 2 respectively into the space between the plates 2, 3. From this latter space the second fluid flows through the ports 26, 23 in the plates 3, 4 into the space between the plate 4 and the adjacent plate 1. The apparatus may be divided by a thick plate 50 of the same form as the plate 3 into water and brine-cooled sections through which the milk flows in series.
