Abstract
474,257. Plate heat - exchangers. MUNDAY, W. O., [Representative of MUNDAY, R. L.]. May 29, 1936, No. 15183. [Class 64 (iii)] A heat-exchanger particularly for pasteurizing milk &c. is formed of a series of hollow plate elements clamped together and each comprising plates 6, 7 of copper or stainless metal separated by rings 8 and formed with corrugations providing a double spiral path 13, 13a extending from the periphery to the centre and back again to the periphery on the outside of each plate. The space within each element is formed with a double spiral path by spiral ribbons 14, 14a of heat-insulating material, and the elements are spaced by metal rings having grooves for packing 12. In use, milk &c. enters the spaces between the elements through ports 16 and passages 18 and thence flows through the diamond - shaped ducts 13 from the periphery to the centre of the elements, returning through the ducts 13a to the periphery and thence through the passages 18a to the outlet ports 16a. The heating or cooling fluid enters the spaces within the elements through ports 17 and passages 19 and flows through the ducts 15 to the centre of the elements returning through the ducts 15a to the periphery and thence through the passages 19a to the outlet ports 17a. When the exchanger is used for heating or cooling by fluid other than that being treated the plates 6, 7 are welded to the rings 8, but when used for regenerative heating the plates are separated f om the rings to facilitate cleaning.
