Abstract

666,298. Knives. BECKER, M. E. July 4, 1949. [July 3, 1948] No. 17592/49. Class 30. [Also in Group XXIII] A multiple-bladed knife for slitting furs into narrow strips and which can be held in the hand in the manner of a pencil, comprises a body portion having a handle and a series of spaced slits, extending rearwardly from its forward end, each of which receives a blade having a sharpened cutting point projecting outwardly from the forward end of the body. As shown, the body 11 formed of aluminium, is provided .with a handle 12 adjustable laterally with respect to the body by means of a clamping member 43 having a screw threaded stem 44 and slidable in groove 41, and a series of bladereceiving slits 14 uniformly spaced by portions 15 of the body. A transverse pin 24 engages the ends of the blades 13 to align their projecting points and a pin 29, having a head 31 extends through aligned apertures 26, 27 of similar shape in the blades and in the spacing portions 15 to retain the blades in the slits. In modifications the end of the pin 29 is screwthreaded to engage a screw thread in one of the end members 17 and the pin 24 is dispensed with the rear ends of the slits being closed to provide stops for the ends of the blades. In a further modification the body has only two blade-receiving slits and is integral with the handle but a many-slitted, larger head may be provided with an integral handle provided that a suitable lateral position for the handle is selected.
