642,219. Hand knives. DUNLOP RUBBER CO, Ltd., and MALTHOUSE, J. W. May 14, 1948, No. 13215. [Class 30] [Also in Group XXIII] A combined holder and guard for a hand knife comprises a holder adapted to enclose the handle and a guard pivoted' to the holder and resiliently urged towards the cutting edge of the knife. The holder 1 comprises a member substantially U- shaped in cross section having an integral: flange 12 slotted to receive the knife blade and formed with a pair of opposed webs 11 to which are pivoted the guard 2 and a safety catch 22 by which means the guard may be held locked adjacent to the cutting edge 21 of the knife blade. The holder 1 is bored longitudinally at 16 to receive a compression spring 17 abutting at its outer end against the guard 2 which is U- shaped in cross section and is provided at its outer extremity with a pair of wheels 7 adapted to engage the surface of the material to be cut so that the guard is displaced to expose the cutting edge 21 when the knife is applied to the material. The safety catch may be omitted as in Fig. 1 (not shown).
