Class 135 [Also in Group XIII] Regulating apparatus influences a regulating member as a function of the rate of change of temperature of a medium by reason of the different rates of expansion or contraction of two sections 2, 3, of different heat capacity, of a length of pipe' 1 through which the medium flows. As shown, a piston 14 is supported by rods 10 and springs 7 between posts 12 and moves within and closes a grooved cylinder 15 secured to a bracket 4 mounted at the join of the thicker walled section 3 of an insulated pipe 1. The hollow ported piston forms a chamber 22 which communicates by a pipe 21 with a regulating member, e.g. through a servomotor. When the piston 14 is raised by the relative expansions of the pipe sections 2, 3 due to temperature changes, the piston ports 16 communicate with a cylinder groove 19 which releases the oil pressure and when the piston is lowered, the chamber is supplied with oil under pressure from a pipe 18 and a groove 17. By making the sections 2, 3 of different lengths or materials, or by having springs of different characteristics, the piston 14, or, as in a modification, a lever pivoted on the bracket 4, may be controlled according to the magnitude of the temperature as well as to its rate of change.
