A compressor is provided with control means for controlling the quantity of fluid discharged therefrom, the control means comprising a plurality of clearance chambers 15 formed within a cylinder head 14 and valve means for successively opening and closing the chambers 15 to or from communication with a cylinder 11 of the compressor whereby the compression ratio of the compressor is varied, the valve means including a control chamber 17 communicating through ports 18 in its wall with the chambers 15, and a valve member 21 which is movable for covering and uncovering the ports 18 in succession, the volume of the control chamber not varying during movement of the valve member 21, whereby the position of the member 12 is unaffected by fluctuations of pressure in the compression cylinder. The movement of the valve member 21 is controlled by movement of a diaphragm 28, the differential pressure across the latter being controlled by a gas governor system (not shown) sensitive to the volume output of the compressor. A dashpot piston 32 damps the oscillations of the valve member 21. The governor system and the diaphragm 28 may be replaced by manual or hydraulic control of the valve member 21. A water cooling jacket 34 may be provided around the chambers 15 or a cooling coil 37 may be introduced into each chamber 15. In a second embodiment, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), the valve member 21 is replaced by a hollow cylindrical rotary valve member.
