Abstract

1,004,699. Valves. W. HOLYER. May 11, 1962 [May 26, 1961; Feb. 21, 1962], No. 18288/62. Heading F2V. A diaphragm valve is controlled by an electromagnetically operated pilot valve which controls the pressure difference across the diaphragm and has a tapered throttling extension. In the first example, Fig. 1, the diaphragm valve 2 which has a circular series of apertures 9 divides the housing 1 into two chambers 3 and 4 the latter of which has an inlet 5 and an outlet 10. The pilot valve which controls the central diaphragm aperture 11 is formed by the conical end of an armature of an electromagnet 14. A dashpot formed by a spring-loaded piston 20 in a cylinder 18 connected to the chamber 3 absorbs pressure pulses therein. In another example the dashpot comprises a compressible member of foam material located in the chamber 3. In Fig. 3, the pilot valve has a sealing surface 24 and a graduated throttling extension 25. The extension 25 may comprise a separate spring-loaded element.
