The position of an expansion valve 8 in a refrigerating system is determined by the flow of refrigerant through a throttle 16, the flow being in turn determined by a thermally actuated auxiliary valve 23 connected to an actuating piston 9 for the valve 8 by a feedback spring 18. Liquid refrigerant from an inlet 2 flows around the valve 8 and also through passages 15, 33, the auxiliary valve 23 and the throttle 16 to the outlet, the auxiliary valve being actuated by a diaphragm 27 subjected to pressure through a capillary tube 30 from a liquid-vapour filling in a sensor 31. The throttle 16 also serves to damp the movement of the valve 8.
