648,871. Temperature-responsive actuating-elements. NAPIER & SON, Ltd., D. April 22, 1948, No. 11063. [Class 64(ii)] [Also in Groups XX and XXIX] In apparatus for indicating or control in accordance with the temperature in a high temperature range, i.e. 815‹C.-935‹C., a small bore bulb 10 lies within a zone at the high temperature and is connected by a capillary tube 12 to a Bourdon tube 14 or like device outside the zone. Moreover, at temperatures below the high temperature range the system is full of liquid such as mercury at a pressure above its vapour pressure while at temparatures within the range the liquid in the bulb at least partly vaporizes and the pressure of this vapour determines the pressure in the system and thereby the position of the Bourdon tube. The bulb 10 is formed to have a volume equal to the volume of liquid required to expand the Bourdon tube through the high temperature range so that at the top end of the range the liquid is fully displaced from the bulb. Below the range, thermal expansion of the liquid controls the position of the Bourdon tube. A formula relating the volume and low temperature filling pressure of the bulb and the pressure-volume characteristic of the tube 14 is developed.
