[Also in Groups XI] In an air heater comprising a metal combustion chamber a provided at one end with a burner b and surrounded by a jacket g through which flows the air to be heated, a spring-loaded plate i is moved by the pressure of the combustion air to control the flow of combustion air through an entrance at the burner end of the combustion chamber. The plate i is mounted on radial springs k connected at their outer ends to an annular flange q on an air-box f, and at their inner ends to brackets t on the plate; the plate is thus free to move axially into a tapering throat formed by an annular flange h on an apertured plate e supporting the burner b, the plate and throat forming an annular entrance of varying size leading to an air jacket d surrounding the combustion chamber a and communicating. therewith through holes in the combustion chamber wall near the burner and at one or more positions along the chamber. The brackets t on the plate i carry spring-loaded fingers n which rub against members u on the apertured plate e to prevent flutter. The air is supplied to the air-box at m from a blower or by the forward movement of the aircraft in which the air heater is fitted.
