Abstract

In an improvement or modification of the parent Specification, in conjunction with the use of the protective porous mass therein specified, there is present in the composition to be sintered a small proportion of a substance having a strong affinity for carbon, e.g. Ti, V, B, Nb, Zr or rare earth metals such as cerium or an alloy or hydride of a metal having a strong affinity for carbon. Thus the composition may contain 0.1-2 per cent Ti, 0.1-4 per cent Nb or 0.1-2.5 per cent V.
