Abstract
660,898. Cooling cylinders. PORSCHE KONSRUKTIONEN GES. Feb. 17, 1949 [May 13, 1948], No. 4349/48. Class 7(ii) In a cylinder head for air-cooled internalcombustion engines with a combustion chamber 1 upon which the cooling air firstly impinges and is divided by the chamber 1 and intermediate walls 14, 15 into a middle and two lateral 'air streams, it is arranged that the middle stream and portions of the lateral streams unite in an equalizing chamber 26 behind the combustion chamber 1. The side walls of the head are provided with horizontal cooling ribs 13 that are longer at' the outlet than the inlet side. The push-rod guides 7 and 8 on either side of the chamber 1 are extended to form the intermediate walls 14 and 15 whilst the valve-rod guides 5 and 6 are also extended to form walls 16 and 17; the walls 14, 16 and 15, 17 form lateral channels 18 and 19 having vertical ribs 24, 25, respectively, therein, the channel entrances being devoid of ribs. The air flows in the direction of arrow R and divides upon meeting the head, a part traversing a central chamber 22, provided with vertical ribs 23 and formed between walls 14 and 15, thus cooling the chamber 1, the remainder dividing and flowing through channels 18 and 19; after reuniting in equalizing chamber 26 the air stream traverses a further chamber 28, also provided with vertical ribs, located between the inlet and exhaust ports 2 and 3. Some air from the lateral streams also flows through the ribs 13 to cool the sides of the head. The top of channels 18, 19 and chamber 22 are closed by a part of the head, which also may have ribs co-operating with ribs 23, 24 or 25, whilst chamber 28 is closed by a part of the head and a part of a metal cover, not shown, around each cylinder. The side walls of the head extend obliquely outward to form, with the cover, a nozzle to force more air into channels 18 and 19. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also a modification in which the invention is applied to an engine without a combustion chamber. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
