Abstract

720,644. Cooling valve guides inlet and exhaust passages. RICARDO & CO., ENGINEERS (1927), Ltd. Oct. 2, 1953 [Oct. 16, 1952], No. 25933/52. Class 7 (2). In an air-cooled cylinder head of the kind having at least one inlet or exhaust port B or C formed therein and opening into the inlet or exhaust passage B<SP>2</SP> or C<SP>2</SP>, such port or each of such ports being controlled by a poppet valve the stem of which passes through a valve guide D or E extending through the wall of either passage B<SP>2</SP> or C<SP>2</SP>, and in which in addition to the walls of the latter, and the pressure resisting wall A which closes the end of the cylinder (which walls are collectively termed inner walls), there is an outer wall A<SP>4</SP> to define, with the inner walls, a cooling air passage extending across the head with cooling fins A<SP>5</SP> integral with the inner walls and preferably with the outer wall A<SP>4</SP>, the fins A<SP>5</SP> forming a series of passages A<SP>6</SP> through which air flows in parallel from inlets on one side of the head to outlets on the other side, at least one valve guide extends between and passes through openings in the inner and outer walls so as to be supported thereby and with that part of the guide which extends across the cooling air passage directly exposed to the cooling air. The valve guides have flanges D<SP>2</SP>, E<SP>2</SP> that abut the outer wall A<SP>4</SP>. In a modification, the guides are made of the same diameter throughout and are held in the proper position by circlips instead of flanges whilst the parts extending through the cooling passage are provided with grooves or fins. In another modification, the bores in the outer wall are made larger than those in the inlet and exhaust passages so enabling the surface area of the guides within the cooling passage to be enlarged. In a further modification, the separate inlet passage is dispensed with and the inlet port is supplied with air from the cooling passage.
