Abstract

659,857. Making internal-combustion engine valves. ROLLS-ROYCE; Ltd. Nov. 28, 1946, No. 23183/49. Divided out of 659,803. [Group XIX]. [Cla,ss 83 (ii)] In a method of making internal-combustion engine valves having a cavity 46 for a cooling medium such as sodium, a partially formed blank 45, Fig. 7, having a bore 47 in the stem of less than the final diameter, is measured to determine any eccentricity between this bore and the cavity 46, and the bore is then enlarged to final size so as to make it concentric with the cavity. The measurement is preferably made by apparatus as described in Specification 659,803, [Group XIX]. A machined initial blank 42, Fig. 4, is forged to reduce the bore at the neck 44, the bore is next closed to produce an elongated solid stem and this stem is then provided with the bore 47 concentric with the outer surface of the head 40. After enlarging the bore 47 as described above, the end 49 of the stem is closed and the exterior of the valve machined to final form concentric with the cavity 46, as shown in Fig. 9.
