Abstract

384,674. Oil engines. RICARDO, H. R., 21, Suffolk Street; Pall Mall, London. June 11, 1931, No. 16981. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (iii ).] Fuel is sprayed in the form of a hollow cone from one end of an elongated combustion chamber having a narrowed section at or about the centre of its length, the whole of the inner side of the chamber being open to the cylinder. The axis of the fuel jet E is substantially at right-angles to the cylinder axis and is directed towards the restriction B<4>, Fig. 2, which connects the two cylindrical end portions B2, B<3> of the combustion chamber. The cylinder head may have a flat inner face, or it may be of the pent-house form shown in Fig. 3, in which four valves are provided, the two exhaust valves K<1> being located within the cylindrical end portions of the combustion chamber ; the piston head is shaped to conform closely to the shape of the cylinder head. Fig. 6 shows an alternative arrangement of the valves in a head having a flat inner face ; one inlet valve T opens directly into the cylinder, whilst an exhaust valve is located within the end R<2> of the combustion chamber remote from the injector. The walls of the portion R2 of the combustion chamber may be tapered inwards towards the cylinder, whilst a liner of heatinsulating metal is provided in the portion R<1>. In each arrangement, the two end portions may be fitted with heat-insulating liners and the restricted portion may be formed by fitting shaped blocks to the walls of a parallel-sided chamber.
