April 27, 1953 [Oct. 31, 1952], No. 11616/53. Class 83 (2). In a method of making hollow valves for internal-combustion engines a blank 1, Fig. 1, having a blind hole filled by a core 2 of iron or other deformable metal is shaped to form a head 9, Fig. 3, and stem 4 from which the core is subsequently withdrawn axially. A projecting end 8 is formed in the core during initial formation of the stem 4 by extrusion for removing the core which may be coated by a phosphate &c. for ease of extraction. A cap 11, Fig. 4, is finally attached as by stud or spot welding. A reinforcing ring 12 may be applied to the blank before the final forging stage so that it is worked into the final form of the head.
