Abstract
1,168,186. Making poppet valves. SULZER BROS. Ltd. 4 June, 1968 [29 June, 1967], No. 26576/68. Heading B3A. [Also in Division F1] A method of making a liquid cooled poppet valve, which has a longitudinal bore 5 in its stem 2 and a cooling chamber in its head 3, comprises providing an annular groove in the side of the head remote from the seating surface 4, making connecting bores 11, 15 from the groove to the bore 5 and closing off the groove by attaching an insert 16 leaving an annular cavity 10 forming the cooling chamber. The bore 5 is first formed and then the periphery of the valve head 3 is provided with the annular groove, which has the cross-section of the insert 16 and the cavity 10. The bores 11, 15 are then formed, the latter communicating with an extension 12 of the bore 5, and the groove closed by the insert 16, which is preferably secured by electron beam welding. Finally, after inserting a tube 6 and retainer 13, the bore 5 is closed with a member 7.
