Abstract

1438740 Valve cooling SULZER BROS Ltd 22 Oct 1974 [31 Oct 1973] 45650/74 Heading F1B A poppet valve for an I.C. engine has a hollow interior containing a primary coolant 20, Fig. 1, which transfers heat from the valve disc 4 to the valve stem 5, the stem having a flow passage for a secondary coolant which removes the heat from the valve stem. The flow passage consists of helical grooves 21, 22 closed by a tube 24. Secondary coolant, e.g. oil from an inlet 12, enters grooves 22 via an annular chamber 14 in the valve guide 2 and passes into grooves 21 via a connecting passage 23, the coolant finally discharging to the exterior from the top of the valve guide. In a modification, Fig. 9 (not shown) the coolant discharges from ports (71) at the top of the valve stem. In another modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the grooves are replaced by axially extending bores. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 8, the flow passage is formed by coaxial tubes 43, 44, the primary coolant surrounding the outer tube. Secondary coolant enters through an inlet 47 and passes between the tubes to the interior of the inner tube via ports 46, and subsequently discharges via outlet 51. Improved cooling results since heat may also be conducted directly to the valve guide via stems 41.
