Abstract
1448635 Engine cooling SULZER BROS Ltd 17 July 1974 [19 July 1973] 31733/74 Heading F1B A diesel engine comprises a cylinder block 1 with a cylinder liner 3 having an exhaust port 11 formed by orifices L3 separated from each other by axial webs containing cooling passages 15 which inter-connect upper and lower annular chambers 18, 17 formed in the cylinder liner. The upper chamber 18 is divided by a ring 20, the inner circumference of which is recessed above the exhaust port to form an orifice 21 connecting the two sections of chamber 18. An outer annular chamber 22 formed in block 1 is divided into two parts by diametrically opposite partitions (23, 24), Fig. 2 (not shown) the partition (23) lying adjacent the exhaust port and having two apertures 27, 28 situated respectively above and below said port. An opening 32 connects one part of the outer chamber 22 with lower annular chamber 17. Coolant, which enters the outer chamber 22 via an inlet pipe 33 located on the side of partition (24) remote from opening 32, is constrained by the partition to pass through apertures 27, 28; subsequently it passes via opening 32 into the lower chamber 17 and thence through cooling passages 15 into the upper chamber 18 where it is constrained by ring 20 to pass through orifice 21. The coolant subsequently passes through channels 34 into the cylinder head 4 and finally leaves the engine through discharge line 36.
