Abstract

1510578 Pistons SULZER BROS Ltd 26 July 1976 [24 July 1975] 31081/76 Heading F2T A liquid cooled piston for an internal combustion engine has a cooling chamber 8, and a crown 6 formed with blind cylindrical cooling passages 20 which extend from the cooling chamber 8 at angles lying in the range 45 to 90 degrees relative to a plane perpendicular to the piston axis A, and have a ratio of length to maximum width less than 10. Each passage 20 may lie in a plane containing the piston axis, A, as in Fig. 1, or in a plane not containing the piston axis A, as indicated in Fig. 4 (not shown). The passages 20 may be spaced regularly, both radially and circumferentially as shown in Fig. 2 (not shown), and may have a cross-section other than circular, Fig. 5 (not shown). The embodiment shows a built-up piston with cooling water applied from a riser 17 to partly fill the chamber 8, the water velocity causing air to be sucked in through an annular gap 18. The liquid level in the chamber 8 is set by an outlet orifice 15 connected to a second conduit 11, as best seen in Fig. 3 (not shown). The crown 6, the skirt 2, and a closing plate 16 are assembled to a piston rod 3 by means of studs 4 and long nuts 5.
