Abstract
1,270,206. Welding by pressure; making I.C. engine poppet valves. EATON YALE & TOWNE Inc. 10 Nov., 1970 [20 Nov., 1969], No. 53381/70. Headings B3A and B3R. [Also in Division F1] In a method of manufacturing a sodiumcooled poppet valve for an internal combustion engine sticks 52 of sodium are placed in the bore 26 of a stem portion 22 of a forged steel valve component 20 and a tip 30 for the stem is friction welded to the stem in a friction welding lathe (Fig. 5, not shown) to form a sealed enclosure for the sodium. External weld flash 50, 51 may be machined off after annealing and the valve then hardened. The internal flash 53, 54 is acceptable provided the bore 26, 36 is not closed by it. The forged valve component 20 is preferably of a corrosion and temperature resistant alloy steel (a specific chrome-alloy steel composition is given) and the tip 30 of a wearresistant steel.
