Abstract

1367826 Making poppet valves; brazing SOC D'ETUDES DE MACHINES THERMIQUES 4 Nov 1972 50939/72 Headings B3A and B3R [Also in Division F2] A method of making a fluid-circulation cooled internal combustion engine valve comprises providing a valve stem 2 formed internally with fluid inlet and discharge ducts 3, 4 and having one of its ends threaded, providing a valve head 5 formed internally with a chamber 6 and a threaded bore 8, screwing the stem and head together so that the ducts and chamber communicate and securing them together by brazing. The stem is provided with an extension 10 which bears against a face 6a of the chamber, thereby stressing the valve head to prevent distortion when in operation. Rings 17, 18 of soldering material are placed on the extension 10 and in a groove 14 in the stem or a groove 15 in the head prior to assembling the stem and head. The length of the extension 10 also determines the clearance between the threads, which depends upon the characteristics of the solder. To assist the flow of solder, the valve is heated with its head uppermost and is preferably heated by induction.
