Abstract
<PICT:0944894/C3/1> A valve tappet comprises a ferrous metal tubular body 10, Fig. 5, closed at one end 12 to form a base having a recessed portion surrounded by a peripheral ridge and a wear-resistant ferrous metal alloy coating 24 within the recess and fused to the base. The valve body is formed by upsetting or extrusion from a low carbon steel, e.g. containing carbon, manganese, phosphorous and sulphur or from a non-hardening stainless steel containing carbon and chromium. The wear resistant alloy containing carbon, molybdenum, tungsten and silicon or in addition chromium is pressed into a briquette 32, Fig. 4, which may be sintered before the fusion operation. A borax flux may be applied to the briquette or a calcium, aluminium or sodium flux is incorporated into the briquette material before forming. An induction heating coil 22 fuses the metals in a nitrogen atmosphere to form a coating alloy and the carbon and silicon constituents diffuse into the valve tappet base metal to form a diffusion bond and a carburized layer 34 is formed to provide support for the coating. A cooling water jet 36 promotes directional solidification of the coating alloy outwardly from the interface between the cooling and the end face of the tappet. The tappet may be subsequently carburized to provide a wear-resistant coating.
