Abstract

538,654. Valves. CARPENTER, E., and HARLEY, A. N. Feb. 9, 1940, No. 2196. [Class 7 (vi)] Hollow poppet valves, particularly for the exhaust ports of internal-combustion engines, comprising a hollow stem a and a cap d, have the latter made of a non-ferrous nickel-chrome alloy such as that known by the Registered Trade Mark "Brightray," or nickel-chrome alloys containing from 5 to 15 per cent. of iron such as those known by the Registered Trade Marks "Glowray" or "Inconel," or a high-tungsten non-ferrous alloy such as that known under the Registered Trade Mark " Stellite." The stem a and head b may be of austenitic steel, or a ferrous silico-chrome alloy such as Silchrome. The joint may be welded with any of these materials, the welding e being carried to the edge of the valve, and a coating provided at f, to protect the part b from the exhaust flame.
