[Class 38(v).] To ensure an adequate blast pressure at the contacts of an airblast switch having one or more pairs of contacts 10, 11 and a blast valve 2 adjacent the compressed air container 1, the delivery pipe or channel 4, 8 to the contacts has a practically constant crosssection and a length between the valve and the contacts of not less than 2.5 metres, the contacts being opened when the air. pressure wave formed initially when the blast valve is opened, has been reflected from the closed end 14 of the pipe or channel. It is stated that this arrangement enables the arc extinction at the contacts to occur at an air blast pressure which is higher than the static air pressure in the container. The moving contact or contacts may be operated mechanically, or pneumatically by the blast pressure or by air in a separate pipe line 5. The blast valve 2 may have an effective cross sectional area larger than that of the channel 4.
