June 25, 1951 [July 15, 1950], No. 15069/51.Class 38 (v) In a gas-blast switch, such as that of Specification 644, 947, having a rotary blade structure or turbine runner for arc-extinction purposes, a supply of compressed air is provided to start the runner rotating before the contacts of the switch separate. In the example shown, the switch has the runner 12 surrounding an arc chamber 11 which may be of gas evolving material and carry fixed arc horns 10. The "moving" contact 4 is actuated by a piston (not shown) and the "fixed" contact 5 is biased by a spring 6, so the switch is opened, the contact 5 can follow the movement of the contact 4 to a limited extent to provide the delay period necessary for the runner to start turning before the contacts separate. Thus when the switch is closed the interengaging surfaces of the contacts are at 19. To open the switch, compressed air is applied to the operating piston of the contact 4 and through a pipe 18 to start the runner 12. The contact separation occurs when the contact 5 is arrested with its contact surface at position 9, the arc drawn being transferred to the arc horns 10 as the end of the contact 4 moves to position 20. As the contacts separate, an extinguishing blast of compressed air may be applied through a pipe 17.
