Abstract

657,117 Internal shoe drum brakes. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Aug. 4, 1948, No. 20599. Convention date, Aug. 9, 1947. [Class 103 (i)] In an internal shoe drum brake, the actuating shaft 92 has one of its ends located between adjacent brake shoe ends and is arranged to spread the shoes apart, the opposite end of the shaft, 94, being journalled in a bearing 96 provided in a fixed member, with sufficient play to permit tangential swivelling movement of the shoe spreading end of the shaft. As shown, the actuating end of the shaft has spaced lugs 98, 100 which when turned engage and spread apart the two shoes 22, 24. According to the direction of rotation of the brake drum 44, the shoes and actuator mechanism are carried round slightly and the deflection of the shaft 92 is permitted by the clearance in the bearing 96 and a flexible joint 104, 106, where the shaft passes through the cover-plate 48. The shoes are guided laterally by means of arms 52, 54, 56, 58 extending radially at each side of the webs from the spider plate 26. A modified construction is described in which the brake has a single combined cover and anchor plate.
