Abstract

655,959. Suction cleaners. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Aug. 31, 1948, No. 22931. Convention date, Sept. 3, 1947. [Class 8(i)] In an operator propelled suction cleaner of the type having a suction chamber with openings 14, 8,' Fig. 2, in front and rear walls 13, 9 to receive a connector tube 17, Fig. 3, in line with a motor shaft 7 from which is driven through a belt 11 a rotatable brush 10, the belt 11 is moved clear of the openings 14, 8 to allow engagement of the converter 17 by transferring it to an axially rotatable sleeve 18 and thereafter swinging a pivoted member, e.g. a converter front cover 16 to which the 15 pivoted on a pin sleeve 18 is secured, e.g. by a pin 19. Transfer of the belt from the shaft 7 to the sleeve 18 is effected by reverse rotation of said shaft by frictional engagement of a recessed cylinder 20 secured to the cap 15 and rotated by a knob 23, and which rotation releases a locking bar 24 to allow the cap 15, sleeve 18, cylinder 20 and the upper part of the belt 11 to assume the position shown in Fig. 3. In a modification the belt is transferred by hand or it may be transferred by an axially displaceable spider. In a further modification the belt is transferred from the fan shaft to a sleeve 45, Fig. 7, on pressing and reversely rotating a spring-biassed knob 48' to engage the end of a stud 48 with the shaft. The sleeve and hence the belt is. shaft. The sleeve and hence the belt is carried by a toggle lever 47 pivoted at a pin 53 to a bracket 52, and displaceable in a plane normal to the axis of the fan shaft.
