Abstract

689,098. Floor polishing machines. FILLERY, G. T. Sept. 26, 1950 [Nov. 4, 1949], No. 28283/49. Class 138 (i). [Also in Group XXVIII] In a combined suction-cleaner and floorpolisher comprising a casing A having a suction nozzle B<SP>4</SP>, rotary floor polishing elements L<SP>4</SP> which can be retracted from an on-the-floor or operative position in which they support the nozzle in an off-the-floor position to an off-thefloor or inoperative position, and an electric motor D driving the fan C and also the polishing elements through a boss D<SP>4</SP>, the polishing elements are secured to a carrier L movable along a stationary guide G inclined to the axis of rotation V-V of the driving member and to the floor level Z-Z, a bell-crank lever H<SP>3</SP> being provided to move the carrier along the inclined guide to retract the polishing elements and simultaneously render the drive thereto inoperative and vice versa. The lever is pivoted at H', has a bifurcated arm engaging a pin K<SP>2</SP> on the carrier, and is held by a spring H' in the position shown in Fig. 1 in which the polishing elements are retracted out of engagement with the floor and the driving member D<SP>4</SP>, the apparatus resting on wheels F, F' and functioning solely as a suction cleaner with agitators B' in operation. To use the apparatus as a floor polisher the lever H<SP>3</SP> is manually turned upwards until its forked end H<SP>5</SP> is engaged by a latch J, in which position the polishing elements will be fully lowered and in driving engagement with the boss D<SP>4</SP>, the nozzle B<SP>4</SP> and the wheels F, F' being raised from the floor level. By connecting the handle to a fork N' pivoted at N<SP>2</SP> on opposite sides of the casing, the apparatus can be propelled with either the floor polishing elements or the suction nozzle leading.
