Abstract

438,622. Vacuum cleaners. HOOVER, Ltd., Perivale, Middlesex.-(Hoover Co. ; North Canton, Ohio, U.S.A.) Aug. 27, 1934, Nos. 24691 and 27810. [Class 8 (i)] In suction cleaners of the type which are adapted to be moved over the floor and have a main nozzle provided with a downwardly opening suction nozzle for cleaning the floor, means are provided whereby the act of placing the cleaner in condition for use with a dusting tool necessitates or causes operation of means for putting the circuit of the motor into condition for operation at a higher speed. Fig. 4 shows a construction, wherein movement of the operating handle G to a position for storage actuates a contact F<1> for increasing the motor speed and also rotates a cranked spindle carrying the floor wheels A<3> to raise the agitator clear of the floor. A converter J shown in Fig. 5, is similar to that described in Specification 422,609 and when moved into a position for dusting, an arm K<1> is rotated by the cam M and actuates a motor switch L, and also a quadrant M<5> rotates a pinion M<6> to move a mask which lifts the belt driving the agitator from its pulley. In a further modification a cover N<5>, Fig. 9, is removed and replaced by the converter P for dusting purposes. The cover N<5> has a lug O<2>, the removal of which actuates the contacts O<1> of the motor switch. The converter P has contacts P<3> which engage contacts P<4> to energize a solenoid Q which disengages a clutch in the drive to the agitator. The first Provisional Specification also describes means whereby the agitator is rendered inoperative by a shield under the suction nozzle. In another form a manually operable member prevents the insertion of a converter until it is removed, which action operates the motor switch. Further, the clutch in the agitator drive is controlled by switches operated by the handle. In another form two fans are provided and one is declutched by insertion of converter which also operates the motor switch.
