Abstract

614,297. Suction cleaners. HOOVER, Ltd., BELL, W. C., and PRESS, R. H. H. July 12, 1946, No. 20897. [Classes 8 (i) and 8 (ii)] In a suction cleaner of the type comprising a casing A, Fig. 1, containing a motordriven fan C and affording a main nozzle A<1> adapted to be manoeuvred by a handle E pivoted at F<1>, and including a preliminary separating chamber D and a final chamber supported by or in the handle E and also having a conduit connection F with the fan outlet, the final filter is cleaned by a relatively movable filter cleaning nozzle exhausting back to the chamber D. As shown, the handle E is hollow with side outlet openings and supports an air-permeable fabric filter sleeve on the inner surface of which rests a starsectioned nozzle G having an elongated slot G<1>, Fig. 3, with rounded lips G<2>. The nozzle is continuously open to the fan inlet by a tube H, a port H<1>, a passageway H<3> and a port H<4>. The whole of the final filter surface is cleaned in turn by rotation of the nozzle about the filter axis either manually by an end grip E3 or automatically as the handle E is rocked about its pivot F<1>. To this latter end the nozzle G is formed with a ratchet G<3> which is engaged by a pawl J<1> carried by an arm J<2> on a rocking shaft J carrying an arm J3 connected by a link J<4> to a. pivot on the casing. The slot G<1> may be annular or circumferential and a valve between the fan and the main nozzle A<1> may cut out the latter during the filter cleaning operation. In a modification, the cleaner has a transverse fan and motor movable with the handle relative to the casing. Specification 568,242 is referred to.
