[Class 8(i) ] In a suction cleaner of the operator propelled pivoted handle type wherein dustladen air from a nozzle 3, 'Fig. 1, is discharged by a motor-driven impeller into a dust receptacle 12 carried by the handle 5, the discharge is effected through a swivel connection into the handle 5 which is hollow and thence into the receptacle 12. The connection comprises a handle socket 7 rotatably mounted between a pair of inturned conduits 6 held together by a bolt 9 and nuts 10. Dust-laden air from the handle 5 traverses caps 15, 17 to enter a filter bag within the receptacle and cleaned air is exhausted through louvres 19 in a removable cover 18. A cable takes up reel 31, Fig. 4, is rotatably mounted on a stationary shaft 34 in the end of the receptacle 12 and is secured to an insulated disc 42 carried by a sleeve 31a and has cable terminals 45, 46 and concentric contact rings 43, 44 engaging terminals 49, 50 to which are connected motor leads 53. The shaft 34 also carries a rotatable coil spring driven drum 37 geared to the sleeve 31a through gearing 39, 38a, 40, 41. The free end of the cable 32 issues from the receptacle 12 through a tubular guide 57 containing a check device comprising stepped spring-biassed pivoted levers allowing free outlet but controlled return of the cable.
