Abstract
645,309. Suction cleaners. EUREKA WILLIAMS ' CORPORATION. May 26, 1948, No. 14214. Convention date, Oct. 29, 1947. [Class 8(i)] A suction cleaner comprises a nozzle 16, Fig. 2, connected by a duct 28 to the inlet 26 of a motor driven fan 30, a motor fan shaft 23 extending through the inlet 26 and driving an agitator 34 through a belt 36, a movably mounted belt guard 40 normally spanning the nozzle below the belt, an actuating member e.g., a slide 86 for shifting the belt guard to a position for supporting the nozzle and agitator out of operation with relation to the floor, and a converter 60 insertable in a port 52 in the 'duct 28 so as effectively to cut off airflow from the nozzle to the fan and allow airflow through the converter. The guard 40 is pivoted at 42 and is secured to a lever 80, the end 82 of which is engaged by the slide 86 on its actuation resulting first in the guard pivoting clockwise and engaging the floor and secondly in an upward swing of the cleaner casing so that the nozzle and agitator are raised clear of the floor. The converter 60 is slotted at 64, Fig. 3, to accommodate the belt 36 and is locked in position by the engagement of an arm 108 with a casing ledge 110; unlocking being effected by pressing a thumb rest 96. In a modification the slide 86 is automatically actuated on the insertion of the hose coupling into a socket at the upper end of the converter.
