655,467. Piston packing; stuffing-box substitutes. SOC. D'INVENTIONS, AERONAUTIQUES ET MECANIQUES S.I.A.M. Feb. 20, 1948, No. 5158. Convention date, Feb. 21, 1947. [Classes 122(i) and 122(v)] In a sealing device between two relatively reciprocable members 3, 4 in which a deformable resilient packing ring 1 is accommodated in an annular groove 5 extending around the inner or outer periphery of one member 3 and pressure is applied to a side face of the ring 1 to squeeze it against the far side of the groove thereby deforming the ring radially and causing it to press against the second member; the packing ring is tapered or chamfered to an edge 2, or almost to an edge, where it bears on the second member. Fluid pressure may be admitted to a side face of the ring 1 either through ducts 8 in the grooved member 3 as shown in Fig. 3 or through a slight axial clearance left between the packing ring and the groove in which it is lodged. In a stuffing-box embodiment pressure is applied to a side face of the packing ring by a helical spring. The packing ring may be of duplex type in which an auxiliary packing ring of softer material than the main packing ring is used to extend or compress the latter radially.
