[Class 145 (i)] A limbed pressing beam for a plank thicknessing machine with a horizontal cutter shaft, comprises a pressing member in the form of a lever of the first order and a feeler controlling a feeler member which is mounted in front of the pointed end of the pressing member, the upper part of the pressing member and the upper part of the feeler member forming a scissors-like device in which a pressing pin limits the vertical stroke movement and produces the pressure of the pressing member. In the form shown, the feeler member 4, mounted on a shaft 3 and having a feeler 5, carries a pressing member 7, the upper parts of the members 4 and 7 forming a scissors-like device in which is placed a pressing pin 10. Rigidly connected to the pressing pin 10 is a guide pin 14 which is freely movable and slightly tilted in a hole 15 in a support beam 11. A spring 12 presses the pin 10 against the upper part 8 of the pressing member 7. When the plank meets the feeler 5, the limbed beam is rotated upwardly about the shaft 3 until the plank meets the pressing member when the pin 10 is clamped between the scissors-like upper members and is lifted from the bottom tongue 18 of the support 11, the spring then keeping the pressing member in contact with the plank. Should the plank have a projection, the pressing member is able to rise even when the pin 10 meets the upper tongue of the support 11 since the pin 10 overcomes the frictional resistance and moves in the scissors device towards the pivot 9.
